New theater opens first season with festival play series

The Cleveland Theater Company opened its first full season on Saturday, December 5 with its presentation of the musical Apple Tree. The musical is one of three main stage productions for the season with shows Tuesday through Saturday in the evenings as well as a Sunday matinee.

In addition, there are a dozen plays included in the Festival Play Series on Tuesday and Sunday nights. These one-act plays range from contemporary pieces to classics from Tennessee Williams and George Bernard Shaw. Two of the first productions in the Festival Plays are A Poster of the Cosmos and Penguin Blues, which are presented Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m.

A Poster of the Cosmos is one man's response to losing a lover to AIDS. Played by actor Larry Benjamin, the character moves through stages of anger and denial in his efforts toward the painful acceptance of his lover's death. The play is directed by

E.V. McElroy and demonstrates that while many of the issues surrounding AIDS are personal, its ramifications are universal. A Poster of the Cosmos runs through January 2.

Playing in conjunction with Cosmos is Penguin Blues, a play by Ethan Philips that deals with a disc jockey and a nun in a alcohol treatment center. Starring Carole Fulton and Howard Taylor and directed by Annie Kitrell, the play chronicles the relationship between the cocky DJ and the nun who denies her problem with alcohol even after her priest requests she enter treatment.

The Cleveland Theater Company is a new company designed to employ local professional actors. Headed by Tom Fulton, the company has leased a space at the Jewish Community Center, but is looking for a permanent site to present plays and develops workshops.
